In most cases I strongly prefer what we do here in San Diego County. Consider an N-lane arterial augmented by right-turn-only lanes at major intersections. Before the road widens for the augmentation, the bike lane stripe becomes broken instead of solid. There is no bike lane stripe at the mouth of the right-turn-only lane, and then the bike lane reappears, boxed by solid stripes, to the left of the right turn lane. Where traffic is heavy and fast, cyclists can find crossing the mouth of the right turn lane harrowing (case in point -- southbound Gilman Dr. at the southbound I-5 entrance ramp in La Jolla), and this is where some sort of special lane marking or other traffic calming might be beneficial. However, in general we do not want to encourage bicyclists to ride to the right of right-turning cars, and we do not want cars turning right across a bike lane without first merging into it. Unfortunately, too many motorists do not realize that the California Vehicle Code wisely calls for launching right turns from as close to the curb as practicable, which would eliminate many right-hook opportunities.
