Any cross bike can be used on mountain bike trails, just not as well as a mountain bike.

The cross check isn't a fabulous racer, but it will take pretty huge tires, so it might make a decent mountain bike substitute.

I take my cross bike on some pretty gnarly tails, but with the exception of fireroads and the like I'd be a lot faster on a cross country mountain bike.
