Bikes: '96 Litespeed Catalyst, '05 Litespeed Firenze, '06 Litespeed Tuscany, '20 Surly Midnight Special, All are 3x10. It is hilly around here!

The torque isn't critical but 40 N-m is 29 ft-lb which is quite a lot. It's way more than hand tight so bear down rather firmly on the locknut tool.
