I have commuted for three years with a Wal-Mart backpack and a 15 inch laptop (17 inch will fit just fine in there). I wrap the laptop on the t-shirt I'm wearing at work that day to protect it. I figure the extra weight on my back gives me that much more of a workout
Can't do the panniers as I don't like what it does to the balance of my bike.
