Get a twine that's not too fuzzy. Tape where you don't want shellac to go. I'd recommend thinning the shellac 1:1 with alcohol for the first coat, then up to 2 or 3:1 (shellac:alcohol) for the final coat. I've used it unthinned before and it took forever to dry and didn't turn out that well.
