The "handle type thing" is a mini bike stand the bikes rests on when folded. It keeps the bike from resting on the chainring.

Once the QR is opened, pull back the QR handle in the direction of the arrow to disengage the handlebar post instead of trying to push the button. This is the same process for the hinge in the middle of the frame.

The black plastic piece is a protector for the bike stand. It can be thrown away, perhaps recycled.
