The key is breathing technique. Stretch as far as you can and hold it, in that position take a large breath in, and then exhale fully and drop down a little further. Repeat this several times, you'll find it surprising how much further you can stretch with this technique. Bend your knees when coming back up to avoid tearing anything.

Don't bounce, as that can overstrech you, and do put your feet together...
