I use mine on the road. Why? My road bike is a 47cm and only has one bottle mount. Back in the old days before Camelbacks I would carry two bottles in my jersey as did many of my friends/collegues. So I find all the fuss about weightand heat on ones' back both moot and kinda silly.
I believe the issue with roadies is they learned the sport from peers/people and publications who were aping the pros. The flaw in everyone's logic is the lower on the food chain like most of us are, the more self-support you have to do. The great unwashed fail to comprehend that the pros are fully supported and when it comes to water the pros just have to reach their hand out as the team sag wagon goes by or pick it up passing through a feed zone.
I also would like to point out that it was a road race that inspired the Camel Back.. The inventor was a an EMT who rode the "Hotter than Hell 100" here in Texas in '89 or '90. Friends, it isn't a Mountian bike race .
