I did not feel that they were out to sell me, though I can see how that might happen in other cases, and probably (make that certainly) does happen in other cases.

Well, if these fellows really know their stuff and they are in love with bicycling, then their opinion is certainly worthy no matter how young/old they are.
The chemistry between bicycle and rider is as unique as the relationship between a married couple. Age, looks, personalities, and other factors just seem to click in often strange combinations.
