How about this: One of my uncles, way back in the day (30's) had the hit/miss motor* on his net boat blow a head gasket way out off the Pamlico sound. He used a hammer head and a pocket knife to knock the head bolts loose. Pulled the head, cut a new head gasket out of the lid of a cheap cardboard suitcase ( I don't know why this was in the boat, he may have picked it up floating in the water some other time) Put everything back together by using the hammer to chisel the bolts back on and fired it back up.

*A hit/miss engine is one that uses a govenor on the ignition. As long as the motor spins over a certain rpm the ignition does not fire. It drops below a point and the ignition fires. They have big flywheels on them. You might sewe one at a county fair, they get used for icecream churns in the old timey sections.
