Shimano has also invested "zillions" in research and development too. Nearly all of the current technology was first developed by them (and to give credit, Sun Tour too). Campagnolo has been a follower for decades and most of their proprietary technology has been developed to avoid Shimano's patents.

Make no mistake, they make very nice components and in some ways their solutions are more satisfying than Shimano's but they haven't been an industry leader for a long time.
