This rack works for a tandem - and probably a recumbent - if the cross bars can be spread wide enough to accomodate the length of the bike (fork on front load bar and rear wheel on rear load bar). I have done it on a Volvo station wagon, it should be possible on most SUVs, not sure about sedans.
