Are you relatively new to cycling? A lot of new cyclists tend to be "mashers". Spinning is more efficient, and with a fixed gear has the distinct advantage of being able to get up to speed much faster which is kind of nice if you are not on a closed course (lights, traffic, etc.).

After a couple years of riding fixed, I've learned to love smaller gears. I think that actually came from riding my geared road bike in the small ring.
