My buddy actually runs a 60 mm stem on his too-large frame. Sure, he should probably be on a smaller frame with a more 'normal' size stem, but what works works, and it's an easy fix for the time being. The advantages of a longer stem are a larger steering radius, which can make handling a little less twitchy.
My point is, that its a big difference. Just a tad under an inch.
