The reasoning behind the fork (and all the geo in general) is that they were trying to approximate the ride characteristics of an early 1900's six-day racer, but with modern compact geo and tig-welding. The way the angles and tubing worked out, they needed the extra A-C height to get the right trail, head angle, etc.

Also, they are using some double-butted tubing now, so chomp on that.
