Nice commute today; pleasant 39 degrees on the way in. A mostly uneventful (save for almost getting right-hooked by a bus) ride in. The forecast for morning calls for temps dropping by 10 degrees and "ice pellets", so it should be an interesting ride.
I finally got my problem with the wheels solved by picking up a nice, old set of old-school 8 speed Dura-Ace hubs laced to some Mavic OpenSUPs from a dude I ride with. They're a bit heavy, but feel buttery in comparison to the old, horrendous Shimano r500s.
It's also that time of the quarter when I get tired of riding a tank, throw off the panniers and don the o'le messenger bag until I get sick of having a sweaty back and put the panniers back on (usually takes a few days).
Oh, and an unrelated side-story. I've been starting to use the bike to ride into the city when going out, basically meeting friends at our destination instead of driving or catching a ride. It gets some looks from the more "conservative" of the bunch, but it's generally looked upon with a bit of amusement and interest. Gotta love it when moving between establishments. "Maybe you should get a head start," they say, "so that we're not eating without you," which gets a chuckle from me as I find myself scarfing down a couple of beers while waiting for them an extra 20 - 30 minutes while they navigate through Saturday night traffic and find parking in the Village. Those rides home are much more enjoyable as well.
