I actually really like the way that looks. A lot of people do it in Japan, not so much here in the US.
I think they're more common in Japan because track drops are (or were) much cheaper over there. Americans were cutting cheap Schwinn bars to make the flop-and-chops, and the Japanese were chopping their version (which happen to be sought-after Nitto 123s).
