This is normally caused by worn chain rings getting a hook on them and not releasing the chain. Other reasons are worn chain, completely dry chain or mud and debris getting into the chain and rings.
I admit that my chain was worn and due to that had worn the chain rings too. Live and learn. Replace your chains in time!
