IMHO it really DOES matter. My concern is the individual who thinks because their $79 bike from X-Mart says "Mountain Bike" on the sales sticker, they can ride single track with it. I've been out there with them, and I've seen the rims bend, pedals break, cranks come lose. There are other's who can add.

If you're referring to riding around town on flat asphault, no jumps, no logs, etc. yeah, those inexpensive bikes are probably OK for that.
