compatible chainrings

i just moved from a really hilly area to a pretty much flat area, and need to change gears. i was at 40x17, and am thinking about going to a 42 or 44 tooth chainring. so question number one: what chainrings are compatible with sugino cranks? and question two: which gear would be better for a general beater/riding to class bike? i've heard a lot of people recommending 42x17 as a solid gear to use, so i think i'm leaning toward that. i'm also thinking about buying a new wheel or two, so a flip flop hub could be a possibility for different terrain.
