I prefer older, or new non-race road bikes with 700c tires. Make sure that the frame, brakes, and forks will accomidate some of the wider tires, if you live in an area with bad winter weather. But it is all just a preference.
What do you naturally like to ride? Find what kind of bike feels right, and then just change out the tires and such as the seasons change. You should not worry too much about anything else, if you are using the bike primarily to commute.
