But I was a fred (according to my own definition). I got into rides I had no business being on. I jumped on the wheels of people that I had no idea who they were while they did workouts. I got yelled at and talked to before I realized that I needed to work on things. I did some dangerous things.

Mostly I refer to freds as some of those Cat5 racers that haven't developed their pack skills yet.
You are a newbie...not a Fred. A Fred would never jump on the wheel of someone who they haven't ridden with because they now that it's stupid, dangerous and rude. A Fred would never wear bike shorts with underwear because they know what happens when they did A Fred enjoys riding for the activity and not because they can 'dial it up' to some extraordinary level of poncelet, pferdestarke, cheval vapeur, watt or dyne centimeter/hour. To a Fred, the ride is about the journey-not the destination. It's about the activity - not the hardware, whether that's the bike, the shoes, the jersey or the Unobtainium tidbits. They can appreciate, and even enjoy, those things but they are secondary.

You understand a little of it...but you have a long way to go, Grasshopper
