Interesting thread, since I just changed two non-hooked bead Araya rims on my Nishiki out for two that have the little tiny bead like yours.
At better than 70 psi the tire would start to bulge on the non-hooked rims. I was cynical about using the new ones, but I had only invested $15 plus shipping on them so not much would be lost.
I was not disappointed at all. Surprisingly, the tire holds firm up to it's rating of 90 PSI. That puny little ridge does the job.
They worked for me, and look almost identical to the original Arayas. Well worth the time and small expenditure.
