Do you not have access to those cheap little crimp-on cable ends? $5 at walmart gets you a set of 2x brake cables, 2x shift cables, ferrules, and crimp ends.
They're not high end but they work.
They don't really solve the problem as when you have to undo the cable to clean/grease whatever, the crimp must be removed and the cable then can untwine. I use both the crimps and an other method.
