Their computer QC has definitely deteriorated, but I'd chalk up the iPod Video death to it being a portable device and having a physical hard drive. Friends of mine who work at the Apple store see far fewer problems with the Nanos and whatnot.
Their Macbooks and iBooks have always had more problems than their professional lines, too. I bet it's a calculated risk of lower quality to hit lower margins.
