I think that they called that a Lasered logo. It was under the anodization, so it had to be something other than paint. It does not stand up to sunlight either, so often you find one with a mere ghost of a logo, or sometimes none at all. I don't think that there were ever any major changes to these cranks as long as they were in production (with the exception of the disappearance of the engraved logo).
