new guy, looking to put a bike together

hi im new to the boards and i joined so i can get more information about fixed gear bikes.

i plan on doing some (at first) occasional commuting to school and work, and was looking for a better alternative to my 06 mongoose tyax mtb. i have some friends who ride fixies and love it so im looking into it. i want a bike manuveurs well and quickly, maintnace to be minimal, and defnetly low cost is key. i think a fixed gear bike would defnetly fall into that category.

i have a complete schwinn sprint( guessing 70's 80's model not sure) in good condition that i was hoping to use for this project.

and thats as much as i know.....

i dont have much info on how to convert it other than i know my choices is either a track wheel or a conversion kit...
also is that even a good frame/bike to use? i already have it thats why i choose it

what else do i need to know...?

thanks for any kind help
