I traveled all over Italy approx. 400 miles (2 weeks) and did not loose any trackpoints on my 76C. Though the GPS is 99% full. What do you have your interval set to on the trackpoint settings? What is the record method set to?

You should be able to use Mapsource to download a view the tracks. There is other software too but you should have MapSource. Google Earth Plus should read tracks or you can use G7ToWin and import the data from the GPX file into regular Google Earth


Set the GPS to magnetic. That way you can use it along with a compass. But unless you go off road, it really does not matter.
