I've found the part synthetic part cotton variety most people wear for soccer works wonders. then, cuff the pant leg, and slide the extra footless sock over your current sock for extra insulation or just straight insulation if your socks arent long enough. this works. fwiw, you don't even have to cuff the pant leg if they're on the slimmer side; just pull the sock tube over the pants and make sure it's not bunched up on the inside of the ankle.
