Thanks, this is a good thought. If the ferrule is something I can remove and transfer to the new cable housing, then I don't even need NOS, I could take POS grade!

Someone at the bike co-op suggested using the barrel adjuster from an old derailleur to fill the same role, so if I can't find one of these 'step ferrules' from an old one, I might try that.
