What is a suitable lock? I'm down in Grants Pass and do not even own a lock. I was planning on bringing a beater FG up to get around on. But beater or not it has parts on it I do not want to loose. There's not going to be indoor bike parking like they had in San Jose. What's the protocol for lock-up in the big city? Is a Brooks saddle left on the bike going to be safe?
Well, my Brooks saddle continues to remain on my bike despite locking it up all over town all the time. That said, I do not have quick release anything and I use a good U lock.
I think that if you get the lower end (~$35) Kryptonite U lock and a cable (if you have a quick release front wheel), you'll be fine. Just don't leave lights on the bike - those will be stolen for sure. If you don't have quick release, the U lock will be sufficient. There are
a couple of LBS's near the convention center where you can pick up a decent lock conveniently.
