That's flat out wrong actually. The R & D department works full time on everything from rims being used to testing tolerances on competitor's frames. They were testing one of the new Trek Madones yesterday and today. The layup of each tube on each bike design is considered. Say what you want about the factories where they are made in China and the quality of the actual Carbon Fibre being used, but from a design standpoint it is not by accident. The new RS (the R3/SL hybrid with longer headtube and longer chainstays) production was pushed back from the original release date due to them wanting to tighten up some aerodynamic concerns. They are picky as hell about stuff. I trust their engineering. I just don't care enough to spend that much money.
