Before you get tools, I suggest you get a good repair book:

I've slowly collected the tools I've needed over time. I'm sure it would have been cheaper to buy a kit up front but I'm kind of a minimalist. There might be some tools in a kit that you'll never use and it may be missing some other things that you'll want.

At any rate, I think the book will give you a good idea of the kinds of maintenance type things you'll do frequently vs. the things you'll do once in great while, if ever. With that knowledge, you'll be better able to judge what tools you should have on hand.
