I usually go by feel which is hard to explain. I spin the chain and if it can't derail by hand w/o binding it's pretty good to me. I do notice when I get the chance I'm always "feeling up" on another's tension.
That is what I do, kind of. I set the tension and then give the chain a few whacks with a wrench while it is motion (on the work stand). If I am satisfied that the chain can't come off, I am happy.
