Well, I take back some of my cynical tone from the earlier post. I expected the lbs would be stand-offish and reluctant to help, being that the bike is now used, BUT, I talked to the manager and he or she has graciously pledged to make it right, whatever that requires. If that turns out to be true, then this would be an excellent example of why it's good to suppport and buy from the lbs.
I actually went back and checked out the smaller 55 cm frame, doing some quick adjustments, and it immediately felt much more right. It was a feeling I would not have been in touch with when I first bought the bike, cause I had not ridden my first road mile. Now, after a modest 1000 miles or so, I can better feel what is right or wrong about a particular size/fit. I can easily get into a tucked, 90-degree elbow position that feels pretty good; whereas on my 58, my arms are more or less straight and braced to support my upper body, which may explain why I had alot of hand fatigue after rides, and why my shoulders and neck hurt.
Whereas the 58cm required my seat to be full-forward and a much shorter stem, the 55cm has my seat fairly well back...but it initially feels so much better just climbing onto the bike. After messing with the 55, I saw the 58 with new eyes - it looks huge to me now. It is a compact frame, and yet my nads still graze the top tube.
Well, I'm going to return for a more thorough evaluation next week.
