I've routed the cables under the bartape on several different bikes/handlebars with no issue. So long as you don't use those cubist modolo handlebars you should be fine.
But isn't it time someone turned this into a barend vs sti thread? It's been a week or so and I feel it might be revisited. Maybe someone has some new important information to share.
