I used to use a mineral spirit soak since once it dries it will be clear of any solvents or detergents.

I used tenacious Phil Wood oil as triflow or other lubes are too viscous to stick to the bearings properly and will just leak out.

That said, If you plan on riding in inclement weather and like SS, get a White Industries ENO or DOS ENO. Sealed bearings and much nicer. You can get a ENO for $65 + ship on eBay or $89 for a DOS ENO. IMHO, its worth it since the ACS or Shimano FW will need to be replaced every year if you ride in muck, and the headache of maintinance goes completely away with the ENO.
