Better to eat a small breakfast and get a steady stream of calories as you ride. That way, you'll end up with a more reasonable blood sugar.

Make sure your hydration drink doesn't use fructose as its primary ingredient - it doesn't metabolize really well and can cause stomach upset in some people. Some ready-to-drink gatorage is okay, some isn't.
