Are you going to strip it down to paintable nudity (I hope)? You'll essentially be building it up new, requiring a bit of skill to get right. And of course you'll need special bike tools.

With friction (vs. indexed) bar-end shifters you won't have to worry about matching the shifter "gear count" to the number of rear sprockets. You'll only have to worry about fitting the cassette onto the hub.

And don't count on being able to get away with replacing the chain alone if it has significant wear. A new chain on a worn cassette is no fun to ride. Measure your chain for wear and look at the condition of your cassette teeth. Consider having a real bike mechanic do the evaluation even if you plan to do the work yourself.
