(a) There's plenty of clearance on a Sequoia for fenders -- at least, there is on my 2003 Sequioa.

(b) I'm sure I don't NEED fenders either, but I have them on both bikes because I WANT them on there.

Recommendations? Find a different LBS? Oh, and probably 45mm fenders for your knobby tires.
