tread is used to disperse as much water away from the contact patch of the tire itself. the rubber compounds used to make the actual tire is what gives traction/ grip between the road and the tire. thats why they mainly use tires with no tread in automobile and motorcycle racing, unless the weather conditions are wet. thats my view on tires
