my newfound respect for my far-northern colleagues and peers...

sirs,
last week you may be aware that i made some comments as to the temperature and weather in my moderately temperate location in the great peoples' commonwealth of pennsylvania. as canadians, finns and various other forum members grumbled about their cold weather, i had a good laugh to myself.

i recant my whimsy at your misfortune. today when i got up to ride to class it was 16°f, with a wind chill of -2°. the winds gusted up to 40mph, and were sustained at 25mph. i ride up a steep hill for about two blocks in the beginning of commute that i usually power up as fast as i can. however, today i was already shivering and worn out by the time i got halfway up the hill! the wind was gusting so hard right into me. i'm used to this, but the cold wind just penetrates everything. then as i got the top, my nose turned into a faucet that let out a river of snot. as i bombed my next hill before i roll up to class, the winds froze the mucus layer on my upper lip.

anyway. i've ridden in this type of weather before. but never the cold! and i think the fact that we were having 60° days last week kinda led me to believe spring was on its way. now i just remembered march.
