If you plan to use it in warmish weather then I wouldn't think twice about it. You'll see that there are thigh length pads out there. For comfort they are head and shoulders (and hips and buttocks) better than nothing. The full length pads are more comfortable.

I'm 6'3" and use a 6' pad. The 3" overhang doesn't bother me a bit.
