Thanks, everyone, for your replies! I'll keep y'all posted on the bike's progress.

The bike lives out at my 'beach house' out on Long Island, but I visited it this weekend and did some cleaning. You're right, the paint is pretty good; all the decals are legible, and there are some fabulous pinstriping. I took some photos with good background scenery, which I'll post one day soon. I brought the rims home will consider whether to replace them with alu or just rebuild them with new spokes.

The serial number on mine is stamped on the lower head lug, right side. I believe it reads E18746 only the lower part of the first letter was stamped; could be a lower case c or the lower half of an upper case E; and the 7 is stamped over a 6.

MnHPVA Guy, thanks for the photo of yours! I'd appreciate a photo of the head badge and serial number if you can do it... but no rush, of course.

As for a rack... what do y'all think of this, which is probably brand new and made in China, but at least it's stamped steel. If I can get it to mount horizontally, it might look okay.... I guess I'd prefer a khaki canvas bag mounted to the seat.
