This is probably true though I was not aware of that. The closed upper part of the front plate is a chorus feature... I am suprised chorus wouldn't use an alloy inner plate as well though, just because 1st gen was such a well made derailleur. You can tell the difference from the front because record would have used an 8mm nut to fasten the cable.
