yeah but i remember bmx pedals that the pins were replaceable/removable.

This actually seems like it'd be ideal. Pull the pins on one side and run clips/straps, you'd have a smooth surface akin to a wider GR-9 platform. On the bottom you have an equally wide and comfortable platform, but you'd have a few pins on there for traction.

Right now I feel like if I'm messing around unclipped and riding on the platform of my gr-9's there is a terribly small surface area that my foot is on, and they slip off relatively easily.

First thing that came to mind was some meat tenderizers.
