General Motors does it.
Not necessarily well...
Trek does it with Lemond.
Plenty of others too, both in and outside of the cycling industry.
It reminds me of a time I went into one of those Trek-o-rama bike shops. I'd just walked in the door when a staff member asked me if he could help me find anything. Not realising it was a Trek shop, I absent mindedly asked, 'So is it just Trek then?' - the guy replied, 'No! Not at all! We've got some LeMonds over here!' - 'Oh. Riiight...'
So you could get shops stocking Pro/Shimano and Pearl Izumi for brand diversity. Yet it all comes back around to the same place eventually.
Probably a good move for Shimano. PI has a much more diverse product range than Pro/Shimano do. But given this, and despite what I've said above, I could certainly imagine Pro and Shimano's clothing lines atrophying over several years. Shimano does a better selection of shoes though.
