Haggling is not expected in a 'store', but when making a big purchase you would be surprised on what can be done by asking. I just don't want to affend a bike shop that I have respect for.
Well, I worked in a bike shop 12 years ago and I can tell you that most bikes have a mark-up of $100-400, including the high end ones. There are exceptions, of course, and things may have changed since then, but between the cost of delivery, shop wages to assemble the bike, and shop wages to sell the bike, bike shops really aren't making money off bikes. That's why they love to sell you accessories to go with your bike, even at a 10-20% discount. They frequently make 30-50% mark-up on those items. Does that answer your question? There's no "invoice" on bikes like there is on cars (in other words, you won't find paperwork on each individual bike), and I know for a fact that some shops get better price breaks than others... even though the distributors like to claim they don't.
