no it's not hard but it's nice to just set and forget chain tension and you won't have to worry about axle slips (even though it rarely happens to folks). Try it out and I guarantee you'll like it as well. The Surly are better than the MKS, to me, because you can perfectly set it will your fingers w/ needing an allen key
