Bikes: Catrike 559 I own some others but they don't get ridden very much.

I think that's a question that only you can answer.

As I see it, there are 3 factors to consider: What's the lowest climbing gear that you need?, What's the fastest spin-out gear that you want? And where are you going to be when you have to shift chainrings? The first two are obvious.

I've never understood why people say they're disappointed if they ride all day on a flat course in the big chainring. To me that's ideal. The problem with a compact crank is it's lack of overlapping gears. If you try to shift gears in sequence, you don't have very many choices about when you shift from the big ring to the little one. When you do, you have to shift a couple of rear cassette gears to get the next gear in sequence.

If you make that shift at the start of a hill, it's not so bad. You usually lose enough momentum during the shift to take you down into the lower gear's range anyway. On the other hand, people who find themselves changing chainrings a lot on the flats tend to hate compact cranksets.

Frankly, simply changing your big ring for a 52 or 53 is going to exacerbate this natural drawback that compact cranksets have. You're going to be more likely to have to shift on the flats and, when you do, you're more likely to have a slow shift so you'll lose more momentum.
